The Hilo side gets a lot more rain than Kona so consider that as well. Hilo may boast more of a traditional Hawaiian feel but the commercialization of Kona.

Kona offers better weather the best beaches and snorkeling newer resorts more vacation rentals and more nightlife compared to Hilo Town.

It has hot weather with beautiful beaches. Kona is hotter and drier and properties cost a lot more. Lots of people do this.

The upside of Kona is its much drier so you are guarenteed allot more sun. Hilo has fewer beaches than Kona and they are less popular. Its never been touted as a resort area due to its lack of approximation to the beach and lack of accommodations.

Spend your last few nights on the west side. Kona not Hilo is the place to stay on the island of Hawaii during your vacation. The Big Island is big indeed.

The main difference would be govt related jobs since they are concentrated in the county seat Hilo. They have a completely different vibe. It is also easier to get to Mauna Kea Hawaiis Highest Mountain using Saddle Road from the Hilo side of our Island.

Kona is definitely the resort area with tons of tourists and its much drier and rockier than Hilo. Kona is how we image Hawaii to look like. One cool thing about the Hilo side is that for much of the year it almost always rains at night rarely in the day.
